Finding nature where you can

Posted by Picasa

After moving to the city, it became very important to find nature where I could. Fortunately, we moved near a lot that has been difficult for developers to sell because it has a little stream which drains the hill above it.  You can't see the water in the photo but you can see the little green plants still growing even in the snow.

I walk here often but because I usually have my dog with me, I stay on the road to avoid the burrs lurking in the grass.

But today, I decided I needed to get out on my own even though the snow was pretty deep. It was so much fun, I felt like a kid again.

Even the weeds were beautiful

I stopped long enough to notice there was still food left for the birds

and heard the cheerful singing of a little brown bird. It wasn't a sparrow and of course it wouldn't come close enough for a photo but I'd seen this little bird before by the lake.  It flicks it's tail like a wren, and every time I've spotted one, it has been near water.

After reading about the American Waterthrush, I thought I'd identified it but it shouldn't be here through the winter.

Mind you neither should Red-Winged Blackbirds but one is still visiting our feeder.
This fellow has been staying through the winter for about three years.  I always wonder why some of them don't leave.

Well, that was it for my walk, it was short and not very exotic but very much appreciated.

  2. It was nice to tag along. I find a different variety of things to shoot when it is snowy. Today I was hoping for more birds, but got a few deer.

  3. I would love to have a little steam on my land. It is a good thing that your lot is left to nature.
Funny...I saw a couple of birds in the flock of Common Grackles that look like your mystery bird. I couldn't get a photo and can't seem to ID it either....still looking tho.
Birds don't read the bird books or the maps! :-D)

    Great Photos...BTW!

  4. Great wonders of nature! It is beautiful!

This reminded me of my childhood. We do not have snow in the Philippines being a tropical country. I am reminded of the beautiful river we used to wash our clothes. The stream beside our water well. And... the singing of the birds welcoming the morning. :)

  6. A walk through nature is one of my favorite things to do. I's amazing what you can see and hear if you take the time to "be one with nature" as the old saying goes. I love it .
Hope you have a wonderfully blessed week.

  7. Exotic is not always far away. Exotic is how you feel about what you are embracing at any given moment. To me, your walk was exotic because it is so different from where I live! :)

  9. I also enjoy going for a walk with cvamera in hand, but then I don't get much exercise because of frequent stops. ENjoyed your photo walk today.

  10. Thanks for sharing your walk, Carole. Our snow has been all gone for a while now and last week was ridiculously mild. Also I've been too busy to go anywhere for a few days so I enjoyed your 'virtual' walk in the snow without getting cold!

  12. Hi Carole, It is so refreshing to go on a Nature walk...even in the snow :) Those burrs are a real pain when they get into a dog's coat and painful to remove too! I agree that even weeds look attractive in the snow.

  14. What a nice find to see green growth among the snowy stream. What a rich burst of life this park must be in the spring summer and fall, yet there lies life and beauty in its dormant winter state.
