California Quail – The Social Explorer
California Quails are known for their sociability and distinctive appearance.
If you're outgoing, enjoy group activities, and have a flair for the unique,
the quail represents your adventurous and stylish side.
Californial Quail are cheerful little birds that you quickly grow to love. They travel in flocks and are constantly slowing traffic down as they cross the highways. Like squirrels they will be 3/4 of the way across the road but upon seeing a car approaching they will turn around and go back the way they came instead of finishing that last 1/4 crossing.
Beautiful markings and colors with a cute little plume of feathers make them outstanding and their fun call which always reminds me of Daffy Duck's woo hoo. Because they come from California I can imaging the creator of Daffy Duck sitting in his studio working on an idea when he hears that signature, "woo hoo," and gives Daffy Duck a voice.
There are interesting facts about them such as: They can live without water by getting what they need from the food they eat. That works perfectly since they like to live in dry environments. They do group childcare and I've seen one mom with 25 babies or more many times. The babies seem to come whenever but are the cutest, tiniest little fluff balls. They are definitely one of my favorite birds,

California Quail in an Apple Tree
Well, I don't have one of those for you but I do have a Flock of Quail in an Apple Tree.
They are hidden pretty well so it might be hard to see them. I know when I looked out the window they sure surprised me and then brought a smile to my face.
They seemed convinced that I couldn't see them there.
It's hard to believe that this is the last post and photo for 2011.
I wish health, happiness and prosperity for all of you in 2012

California Quail
Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all a 2011 full of health, love, joy, peace and even in these difficult times - prosperity
I have been ill with a cold/flu thing that has been really hard to shake so I've been absent from visiting blogs and from posting but I will be reading between naps.
The closest I've been to any nature in a long while has been my own backyard but it doesn't have as many exciting birds as some of your yards do. I'm continually amazed at the number of bird and animal photos captured that way. I've seen more wildlife from people blogging in urban areas than I ever saw all the years I lived in the country.
These California Quail are sweet little birds that were introduced here to help eliminate bugs in the orchards. I'm sure the first ones were not too happy with all the snow but somehow they've survived and even flourished in this area.
They are such friendly birds that you often have to wait for them to move when driving or walking. Although they can fly, they usually choose to run instead.
For years, I never saw them in the winter and have often wondered where they went but then one day, I purchased a bag of bird feed with a large amounts of ground corn in it and I don't know how they found out but not even 2 hours later a whole flock arrived.
I am so pleased that in spite of the local cats, coyotes, hawks and owls, they are so numerous. California Quail are one of the nicest surprises I discovered in this area.
Well forgive me if there are mistakes I keep reading this over and over to edit it and am not absorbing anything so I'm just going to post it.

California Quail
When I first moved to the Okanagan Valley, I kept hearing a comical "woo hoo" sound. It was such a silly sound, that I had to find out what it was. I asked but amazingly couldn't find anyone that knew or even noticed.
One day, while out walking, I heard the sound again and was determined to find it, so I followed the sound. Sitting on a post, overlooking the yard was a chubby, little bird with a feather curling straight up and out of his forehead. I had heard of quail before and even had seen pictures of them before but never really paid attention, until I saw them up close.
It didn't take long to realize that this fellow sitting on the post was a guard for the flock feeding in the grass down below him. Apparently, local orchard owners imported them to eat the bugs and they do an excellent job and their numbers have been increasing until now, they roam in flocks everywhere.
California Quail have become an everyday sighting for me now. They are not hard to find in this area, especially in the spring, when the chicks are out feeding. The guard male "woo hoo's" almost constantly and between that and his silly plume he always brings a smile.
